Reconcile airfield history with current impacts
Huntingdonshire’s December 2024 Alconbury Weald design-code report discusses a defined heritage area and listed buildings. Built-heritage controls and below-ground archaeology have different evidence and approval requirements; one does not discharge the other.
For either site, assemble demolition, slabs, services, contamination and earlier investigation plans alongside the proposed depths. Identify surviving ground by evidence rather than assuming airfield use removed all archaeology. Confirm the live application/condition for the parcel being procured.

The landscape
Extensive flat sites with decades of military infrastructure — runways, hardstandings, hangars, service trenches — laid across gravel and clay ground with recognised archaeological potential. Deposit survival varies sharply between built and open ground.
What it means for your development
On sites of this scale, the difference between an evaluation designed around documented previous disturbance and one applied uniformly across the red line can be very large indeed. Compiling the historic infrastructure record early is one of the highest-return pieces of work a developer can commission.
