What Happens If Archaeology Is Found During Construction?
Something being found mid-build is not, in itself, a disaster. Having no agreed instruction route for it usually is.
The honest answer
If the site is under a watching brief or an approved scheme with provision for unexpected discoveries, the process is already defined: work in that area pauses, the discovery is assessed and recorded, the advisor is notified where required, and a proportionate response is agreed. The programme impact is normally contained to the affected area.
Where there is no such provision, everything has to be negotiated from a standing start while the site waits, which is the expensive version of the same event.
This is why the unexpected-discovery clause in a written scheme matters far more than its length suggests. It converts an unplanned event into a defined procedure with a known decision-maker.

Will the whole site be stopped?
Ordinarily not. A proportionate response isolates the area concerned and lets work continue elsewhere, provided the approved scheme sets out how that decision is made.
